An evening's travelling north out of Edinburgh and over the Forth on the way to a boat trip out to the Isle of May, the island where gannets and puffins nest and where seals come ashore to give birth. The road unwound past green hills, a wind turbine standing over the hedgerows, and the tall white pylons of the Queensferry Crossing under a bright blue sky. Signs ticked off the miles into Fife — Leven, Methil, Buckhaven — with distillery and whisky walls passing by along the way. Six hours of moving light, signposts and sea air.
